Seamus knew she expected him to head back in, but he turned back to the trail and started back up the narrow path. Amy looked down the trail toward the castle before following him. Once they were a good distance from the castle he stopped. She slammed into him, and he reached out to steady her. “Off in lala land?”

“I guess.”

“Are ye angry wi' me?”

“Yes.”

Not knowing what to do to ease the tension, he spread out the blanket he’d brought and started unpacking his backpack.

“You brought lunch?”

“I thought ye micht fancy a picnic.”

He could see the emotions flicker across her face. She wanted to stay mad, but if he pressed the issue, he could get her to forgive him.

“Ah dinnae ken why ah wis such a fool tae dae whit ah did.”

“If you think that thick Scottish brogue is going to win me over—”

“What?”

“You’re probably right.”

“Would ye care for some bubbly?”

“You brought champagne?”

“Naw. Tis sparkling apple cider.”

“Sounds perfect.” He poured them each a plastic cup of sparkling cider and handed her a wrapped sandwich. “I dinnae ken what these are. Mum made them.”

“I’m sure they’ll be good.”

“She’s not much of a cook, but she kin make a decent sandwich.”

They unwrapped their sandwiches and ate in silence.

When Amy finished eating, she lifted her hand to his cheek and ran her hand along the stubble.

“I should’ve shaved.”

“No. I like it.”

“Ye do?”

“It gives you that rugged outdoorsy look.”

“If ye want to stick to yer rules, ye should nae flirt wi' me, lassie.”

“How did I flirt?”

“Dinnae play dumb. Ye ken what ye do to me when ye look at me wi' yearning and touch me like yer doing now.” He brushed a stray hair from her face and caressed her neck and jaw line wi' a featherlight touch. “Ye cannae pretend not to feel the intimacy.”

He saw something flicker in her eyes before she turned away and let her hand drop to her side.

Leaning over, he whispered into her ear. “When ye decide ye want a real relationship, say the word. I’m no longer the one running away.” He deserved her cold shoulder. When he’d left, he’d caused her pain, but he’d thought leaving would protect them both. If he’d have stayed, he would have hurt her more in the long run. He hadn’t been ready to give her his heart. Jessica’s betrayal had been fresh. He’d gone back to Virginia after his assignment without saying goodbye to Amy first, and he could see now that his choice had been the wrong one. He coudnae blame her for not trusting him but hoped they could move past his mistake before the end of his family reunion. It would nae be easy being around Amy if she didnae want more than friendship from him. Her earlier comments betrayed her true feelings, but he wondered if she’d ever allow herself to let him in again.

Packing up their picnic lunch didnae take long. He started back down the trail, and this time she stayed close to his side instead of following behind.
